Bag Charm 101: Instantly Elevate Your Bags

A bag charm is like a friendship bracelet for your favorite purse.

There’s something so nostalgic about dangling a little bit of personality from your bag. It’s a conversation starter, a mood booster, and a tiny piece of art you carry with you everywhere. 

If you’ve been looking for a way to elevate your bags, you’re in the right place. Today, I’m sharing five of my favorite charm designs that are as fun to make as they are to wear.

1. Double Heart In Heart Bag Charm

  • Cut out the fabric you want to use for the Double Heart in Heart Bag Charm using the free pattern available for download below.
  • Center the A3 piece on the A2 Piece and sew it with a ⅛” seam allowance.
  • Then center the sewn pieces on piece A1 and sew with a ⅛” seam allowance.
  • Now, repeat the two previous steps to sew the B1, B2, and B3 pieces.
  • You can then attach the Double Heart in Heart to your bag from the center strap.

2. Double Smiley Face Bag Charm

  • Cut out the fabric you want to use for the Double Smiley Face Bag Charm using the free pattern available for download below. This should be yellow faux leather.
  • Also, cut a piece each from the Double Smiley Face pattern without cutting the eyes and the mouth; this should be black faux leather.
  • Now, set the black fabric right sides up and place the corresponding Smiley Face on it right sides up. Use glue to hold it in place.
  • Then sew the pieces together round with a ⅛” seam allowance.
  • Cut two 8” x ½” pieces of fabric and sew each of them wrong sides together on the long edges.
  • Now, take these two tiny straps and sew their short edges each to the top edge of each Smiley Face.
  • You can then attach the Smiley Face to your bag from the straps.

3. Little Bag Charm

  • Cut out the fabric you want to use for the Little Bag Charm using the free pattern available for download below. (You will have to cut this on fold according to the pattern)
  • Install a riveted cap magnetic snap.
  • Cut a 3½” x ⅜” piece for the Handle, and use rivets to hold it to the top of the bag.
  • Now hold the sides of the bag wrong sides together and sew with a ⅛” seam allowance.
  • You can use a tiny chain connected to a key chain hook to hold it to your bag.

4. Bow Bag Charm

  • Cut two 12” x 2.5” pieces and glue the wrong sides together.
  • Now, cut out the Bow Bag Charm piece A using the free pattern available for download below, from the 12” x 2.5” piece.
  • Cut two 5.5” x 5” pieces and glue the wrong sides together.
  • Cut out the Bow Bag Charm piece B using the free pattern available for download below from the 5.5” x 5” piece.
  • Set the center of piece B at the center of piece A, and use glue to hold it in place.
  • Now, fold the short edges of the long piece to the center, and also use glue to hold it in place.
  • Cut a 2” x ½” piece, fold it around the center of the Bow, and use glue to hold it in place.
  • You can then use a long rivet to hold this to your bag.

5. Fur Pompom Bag Charm

  • Cut out the fabric you want to use for the Fur Pompom Bag Charm using the free pattern available for download below.
  • Take a hand needle and thread, and use it to baste loosely around the edges of the piece.
  • Drag the thread together until you have a little opening.
  • Now, stuff some cotton wool inside the piece.
  • Drag the thread completely and tie it off to secure it.
  • Use the same hand needle and thread, and use it to attach a 4” tiny chain to the Fur Pompom ball.
  • Also, attach a key chain hook to the other end of the tiny chain.
